Salinas – The San Benito Lady ‘Balers are right where they want to be for next Tuesday’s match.

On Thursday in Salinas, the San Benito tennis team triumphed again 7-0 over host Alisal, keeping the team undefeated and extending the squad’s winning streak to nine.

The Lady ‘Balers are currently 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the Tri-County Athletic League.

On Tuesday, they’ll face some serious competition when Salinas comes to the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in a battle of undefeated teams.

The Cowboys are also 5-0, and defeated Notre Dame 5-2 in recent weeks, while San Benito upended Notre Dame 4-3.

“Playing for first place,” coach Ed Cecena said. “The team that wins that match will be in the drivers seat for the league.”

On Thursday, San Benito made sure they’d remain undefeated by sweeping Alisal.

No. 1 singles player Amanda Marshall defeated Annabel Quintozo 6-0, 6-2, and No. 2 singles player Yumi Chang upended Nicole Saldana 6-3, 6-2. Kaitlyn O’Keefe kept the trend going by beating Cindy Leong 6-0, 6-1, and Abby Woods supplied the singles sweep when she won her match 6-3, 6-1 over Brandy Saldana.

“It’s been a surprise to be undefeated,” Cecena said.

In doubles action, Rachel Maheu and Elena Fata won 6-1, 6-2 against Victoria King and Anna Vergara, and Crystal Perreira and Marisa Ibarra won 6-0, 6-3 against Amanda Salazar and Cynthia Rodriguez. In the No. 3 pair, Bri Ahumada-Wolfsmith and Rachel Smith defeated Vavida Alvarez and Nancy Tiznazo 6-0, 6-4.

On Tuesday, San Benito will host Salinas at Ridgemark for a 3:30pm match.

“The big match is next Tuesday,” Cecena said. “Two first-place teams going at it … It looks like it’s going to be a pretty good matchup.”
