San Benito keeps North Salinas off the scoreboard with 4-0

Mari Vallejo’s RBI single in the fifth inning was enough for San Benito Tuesday, as Marisa Ibarra and the Lady ‘Balers softball team shut out host North Salinas 4-0.

It was the first Tri-County Athletic League game for San Benito in three weeks. But despite the league layoff, the Lady ‘Balers were in their usual, silencing form.

Through five league games San Benito has allowed just two runs, and Ibarra was at the forefront of that impressive streak once again on Tuesday.

The senior hurler pitched a complete game, scattering four hits while striking out eight. Ibarra allowed four walks, but kept the Vikings at bay, nonetheless.

Following an inning in which both teams loaded the bases with no outs and failed to post any runs, San Benito grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Vallejo singled in Bre Fata from third base.

The Lady ‘Balers tacked on three more runs in the sixth when Jessica Steigleman hit a two-run homer that plated JC Clayton, while Fata’s RBI single later in the inning scored Jessica Vest from second to make it 4-0.

Vallejo led the Lady ‘Balers at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance, while JC Clayton was 3-for-4 and Vest was 2-for-4.

Taylor Powell, meanwhile, made two strong defensive plays in right field, according to manager Scott Smith.

San Benito (4-1 TCAL, 18-3) will host Salinas Thursday at home. First pitch is at 4:30 p.m.
