Hollister National Little League 11-12 manager Tim Furtado reports that Dane Lamanna is “one tough guy.” Lamanna, who played for the Braves during the regular season, played half the season with a broken toe. During the first Majors all-star practice, Lamanna broke his nose trying to catch a ball in the outfield.

Apparently what doesn’t kill one makes one stronger.

Lamanna had a day to remember Monday night in Hollister National’s 17-0 destruction of Salinas-American/Gambetta in a District 9 game at Manzanita Park in Prunedale. Lamanna had a grand slam homer in the fourth inning and added three doubles for a grand total of six RBI. In a 7-4 loss to Salinas-Atlantic on Sunday, Lamanna had a two-run homer, giving him eight RBI’s in the past two games from his leadoff spot in the order.

“He’s peaking at the right time,” said Furtado. “He’s really seeing the ball well right now. He has blazing speed, too.”

Another Braves player, Derek Palermo, went 3-3 with a home run and two RBI. Palermo pitched the first inning for the win. Marcus Synegal, Justin Schlie and Chad Whitehead had an inning each on the mound as the game was called after four innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. The four pitchers combined for a one-hitter.

Bret Furtado and Jeff Hann each had a double for Hollister National.

Tim Furtado is trying to figure out the way the tourney bracket works. Hollister National defeated Hartnell 14-9 to open the tournament, but will have played one more tournament game than Hartnell when the two teams meet tonight at Manzanita Park at 5:30 p.m.

“The bracket is crazy the way it works,” said Furtado.

If Hollister National wins tonight, it receives a much-needed day’s rest before returning to tournament action on Thursday against Wednesday’s Hollister American-Soledad loser.

11 Year-Old Tournament: Hollister American was eliminated from the 11 Year-Old Tournament in Salinas when it was blanked 5-0 by Continental Monday night.

Meanwhile, the Hollister National 11’s face King City Wednesday night with the winner vaulting into the championship round holding the hammer.
