Veteran John Cardinalli waves to the crowd as he rides down San Benito Street during the Veterans Day Parade Nov. 11 of 2014.

I would like to thank you for running this year’s VFW announcement for the Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest. We received over 75 entries from nine different schools. Thank you.
I’m pleased to announce the winner of the 2014 VFW Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest was Zachary Barrios, a seventh-grader from Southside School. His essay on “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans” was judged first out of 75 entries. Zachary’s essay along with those from runners-up Sean Slavich and Christina Peterson from Sacred Heart School were forwarded to the 12th District (which covers an area from South San Francisco to King City) for the next level of competition.
Zachary Barrios will receive a check for $100 for being the winner of the VFW Post 9242 contest. Sean Slavich and fellow student Christina Peterson from Sacred Heart – along with fellow runners-up Chad Champion from Cienega School, Alexandria Baer from Spring Grove School, Joseph Bisceglia from Tres Pinos School and Isabella Donati from Southside School – will each receive a $25 check. Certificates of Merit will be awarded to the writers of all the essays.
