dated June 2, and available from Steven Kinsella of Gavilan,

the Gavilan College District will act as lead agency, preparing
an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the project referenced
above.

Why should Gavilan prepare the EIR for Fairview Corners, which
is a residential development of Dividend Homes? Dividend Homes
would like to create the impression that these projects are
related, but they are not. The proposed campus has an area reserved
for on-campus housing, so it is clear that Fairview Corners is NOT
campus housing.
The time spent on this part of the project by Gavilan staff is
paid for by tax dollars. This is a clear and outrageous misuse of
public resources.
These are unrelated projects of a profoundly different nature.
Gavilan should do the EIR for its campus, and Dividend Homes should
do the EIR for its subdivision. One has to wonder what inducements
have been offered to Gavilan or its staff to make them so eager to
carry this ball for Dividend Homes. Perhaps your newspaper can help
us understand what is really going on here.

Speak out for whales
Your voice can make all the difference. To participate you don’t need to belong to any political party or activist group. What you do need is a heart, compassion and a conviction to continue using your voice until whaling in all its forms (like so-called scientific whaling) is abolished across this planet.
In a few weeks the annual International Whaling Commission (IWC) will be meeting in Santiago, Chile. The countries of Japan, Norway, Iceland and their pro-whaling minion (bought and paid for) will be doing their best to overturn the moratorium (ban) on commercial whaling. At a time when we need to strengthen conservation efforts to protect whales pro-whaling groups are doing all they can (which is considerable) to bring back the good old days of bloody slaughter (extinction).
Congress is currently considering H. Con. Res. 350/S. Con. Res. 86, which states that our country “should use all appropriate measures to end all forms of commercial whaling”. If passed the Administration and the IWC (remember the people who hand out quotas of death each year) would know that Americans want better protection for whales.
Sometimes in your life you make compromises, especially in the current economic straits we are all in. Your voice does not cost you anything. Yet it is the most powerful possession you have. Let our government know that when it comes to protecting these intelligent socially complex beings there can be no compromise.
Please take a moment to call U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein at 202-224-3841 to ask her to support this resolution. Senator Barbara Boxer and Representative Sam Farr are co-sponsoring the resolution. The whales have no voice in deciding their future. Use your voice to save them.

Money better spent elsewhere
Friday the 13th is a lucky day for us. We are a new community group in Hollister to overcome confusion and misinformation. The good news is that we could save the community over $250 million. Imagine what that amount of hard cash would do for our city and county if it remained in those coffers. Think of the schools, roads, health, library, city and county offices that are closed today.
If you haven’t guessed it by now, I am referring to our city and county collected tax money that goes directly to fund this war in Iraq.
You would think we would be people for proper use of tax funds. Actually, we are “Hollister People for Peace.” Our next function is rapidly approaching on another Friday, a week away on June 27. It is quick notice because we will feature a returning military veteran from a local family. He wants to share with his home community his stories and the stories of his buddies. We will keep you informed.
