Volunteers make library work
Thank you Friends of the Library and volunteers for all your
support and many contributions.
With the support and efforts of library Friends and
volunteers:
· The new picture book area rug, funded by the Friends, adds
warmth, color and a wonderful place for children and parents to
enjoy reading together.
· With Friends of the Library and volunteer support, the Library
can reach out to youth by offering educational, recreational and
inspirational library programs such as the Summer reading club,
story time and after-school Homework Club.
· The library now has a new professional collection of library
materials, funded by the Friends of the Library, for youth services
staff to use when planning programs and doing story times.
· With grant and financial support from the Friends, the
children’s and teen collections are being strengthened to better
meet the needs of the young people and their families in our
community.
· As a result of the ongoing Friends of the San Benito Free
Library’s Bookmobile campaign, the library’s new bookmobile and
Mobile Family Learning Center will be well stocked with library
materials made available for check out to people throughout the
county.
And this is just to name a few of the many accomplishments the
Friends of the Library and volunteers made each and every day.
Your contributions have made a big difference for our library
and community.

China bankrolling war
One-hundred-six Americans killed in Iraq in January, February, March. Forty-six Americans killed in Iraq in April. It cost the United States $40 billion, borrowed from China, to sacrifice these brave Americans. Our forces pray that China will stop loaning money to the U.S. so they can return, safe and alive, to their families.

Three strikes, we’re out!
No. 1, look who is running for President. This position has always been revered as the No. 1 office of the world. Listening to the promises and the bickering and profiles of candidates, “these three are the best leaders of our nation?” Then we have a deficit of trillions of dollars and leaders.
No. 2, the financial crisis. I agree, it isn’t a recession, with the rice rationing it looks more like a depression. Trillions in debt, if we all went to cash in the little money or stock we have, would it be available? Storage sheds full of successful marketing and ultra consumerism. Families equating want with need. We are a land almost out of money.
No. 3, Global warming. The family plugged in as they walk in a park, creating more nature deficit, and closing our parks. We drive, we sit, we eat out, we use electrical devices, we go to the gym and have someone else take care of our lawn, wash the car, clean the house. We medicate plants so that they are perfect. We import and pay for food that comes from other countries. A country that used to be self-sufficient depends on importing from countries that we owe debt to. The fuel we run to work, play and shop outside of town, building schools and facilities away from those who use them, sprawl, has cost us. We refuse instead of repair, and the companies have planned obsolescence with many items so as not to have 30 year lives, maximizing profits. What do we build?
Waste. We are almost out of earth.
Out of leaders, out of money, and out of earth.
What is a country to do? It takes a family, one person at a time to change. Take out the lawn plant eatable crops. Give responsibility to the children to teach them to be leaders. Make an old fashioned need list and put it on the fridge. Shop seasonal four times a year, during sales. Find the thrift stores and use them as much as possible. Weekly visit parks, and this summer go to a National park, and don’t watch a cd, or have the ipod on during the trip. Turn off tv, ipod, computer for two hours and play games or go out of doors together. Pack the family for errands and make the journey to town an event with several stops instead of one. Plant trees. Use products that are biodegradable and have the energy star. Change is the only constant in our lives, and the position that is being supported for the next President of the United States of America.

Can you help sober grad night?
I would like to thank our community for its support of San Benito High School’s Sober Grad Night. Our community has helped support this event for the past few years and we could not have put on such a wonderful event without the help of this community. This event has grown over the past three years to become an event where our graduating seniors can come to spend the night, have fun, and be safe and sober.
Sober Grad Night had a reputation of being a place to go to sober up. San Benito High School parents wanted to change that image of Sober Grad Night. With the support from the community, the 2005 Sober Grad Night was a success and has been since. The Class of 2006 had 350 out of 526 graduates attend and the Class of 2007 had 424 out of 531 attend. Each year we have increased attendance, giving a party with activities focusing on a fun evening without the use of alcohol or drugs.
Businesses in our community, along with other non-profit organizations and private citizens have been our main support for monetary and raffle prize donations. We greatly appreciate their past and current support. Donations have been down this year due to the economy. If you can donate, we would greatly appreciate any support. Currently, we have three fundraisers. Our first is a Business Card Fundraiser – the business card ad is $150 and will run in the Pinnacle Newspaper in May. In addition, your business name will be on a banner displayed at San Benito High School. Our next fundraiser is a BBQ/Raffle on Sunday, May 4, starting at noon at Johnny’s Bar and Grill and our Car Wash Fundraiser will be on Saturday, May 10, at Sunnyslope Medical Center. We are also in need of volunteers for the evening.
If you would like to make a donation, please send checks payable to SBHS Sober Grad Night, 141 Holliday Drive, Hollister, CA 95023. If you are donating a raffle prize or volunteering, please call me at 831-902-8608.
I would like to ask the community to support and patronize the businesses that have generously given to SBHS Sober Grad Night. Without their donations, Sober Grad Night would not be as successful as it has been these past few years. Thank you for your support.
