Music and Art Both Essential to a Complete Education

I was happy to read about Gavilan College’s “Arts Back in the Classroom” program for elementary schools (“Students Learn the Value of the Arts,” April 21).
Art and music engage kids – and grown-ups – at a different level than math and science, but they are all equally essential to a complete education.
Hollister is blessed to have a fine band music program for elementary through high school students.
Our community should cherish and support that program and know those kids are receiving an education that has become a vanishing breed in other parts of our state and country.
Art and music are such a positive contribution to society and we need all of that we can get in these nutty times.

City Needs to Put More Police Officers on the Street

I am absolutely appalled that our City Council is so irresponsible to allow the citizens of Hollister to be subjected to crime like we are experiencing and not even have one-fourth the needed number of officers on the street.
Shame on you! How can you sleep at night knowing we are not safe?
I applaud Ray Wood for writing to inform us citizens that we are severely understaffed (“Officers Doing Their Job, Despite Staff Cuts,” April 21).
Unfortunately for me I do not feel safe at all.
With the rash of robberies, burglaries, auto thefts and break-ins it’s just a matter of time that more and more of us will fall victim to these crimes.
I am calling on all citizens to join me in a protest against the city for allowing this. I will be organizing a protest. If anyone is interested please e-mail me at [email protected]
Help me make our city and streets safe for us and our children again.
