Concept of Learning Through Community Service Not New
Editors,
The concept of service learning through community service is not a new one and is being adopted by schools all over America. A recent writer compared service learning with Nazism and stated that Franklin Roosevelts CCC was inspired by the Nazis.
He should check his dates. The CCC was founded in 1933 and a similar Nazi public works plan wasn’t founded until the following year. There was a worldwide depression and it should be no surprise that two of the most industrialized countries in the world would develop similar programs to escape economic disaster. But, it does not make the CCC and FDR Nazis. What an absurd and insulting comparison.
The CCC, most people would agree, helped put thousands of American craftsmen and laborers to work and created some of America’s most beautiful parks, buildings, and bridges. It was not forced servitude and all were compensated. By the time their work was done America was out of the depression and better prepared to fight WWII.
Service Learning is not “National Socialism” but an opportunity for teenagers to better understand the community in which they live through practical work experience. It helps build a sense of shared responsibility and a better sense of community. That is not Nazism. It is learning to be a good neighbor and a good citizen.
Keep up the good work San Benito High.

Stage Company Production Shouldn’t Be Missed
Editor,
I moved from Hollister a few years ago and come back regularly to enjoy the San Benito Stage Company’s performances. I think they have outdone themselves this time with their performance of “Beauty and The Beast.” In a few words, it is not to be missed! The choreography, beautiful singing, imaginative and delightful costuming and experienced acting were worth my nearly three-hour drive.
The stage company puts much love, time and talent into their plays. Show your support and go see Belle and the Beast. You will be well entertained and impressed!
