You don’t hear much about how important it is to work on your attitude while golfing, but it’s just as important as the swing.

When you struggle on the course, it is much easier to blame your swing or equipment than to admit it was your temper or a lack of confidence that caused you to falter.

Confidence in a new putter or driver generally lasts until you have three bad rounds. Swing confidence almost never pulls through in the clutch so you always need to like and trust your talent.

With good self confidence, we may hit a bad shot, but know our recovery shots can save our score. Where do we find confidence? Usually, when you make the effort to work on shots that need improvement, confidence builds. Play to your strengths and not the way others play.

If you continue to struggle, seek help from a local PGA or LPGA teaching professional. Learn to like your talent and enjoy the game.

Patriot Golf Days

Labor Day weekend this year will be is Patriot Day weekend at golf courses across the nation. During this time of the year, courses will ask golfers to donate for our injured military.

The PGA of America is heading this charge and several golf courses in our area are participating. San Juan Oaks Golf Club and Ridgemark Golf and Country Club are supporting this great cause.

So be sure to check if any specials rates will be given by our local golf courses to those golfers donating to the cause.

Ridgemark will reduce each golfer’s green fee by half the amount of their donation. So if you donate $10, Ridgemark with deduct $5 from your green fees. All donations are appreciated.

A Tip from Martin Hall

This tip was given by a friend of mine – Martin Hall of The Golf Channel.

I worked with Hall during the Jim Flick/Jack Nicklaus Golf School held at Pebble Beach.

There, Martin used a rope attached a tennis ball on the end as a golf club to show tempo and use of soft hands while swinging.

If your swing has a good tempo, the rope will swing around and the tennis ball would tap you on each of your sides. If you have any jerks in your swing or squeeze the rope too tight, the rope will not swing smoothly.

I thought a golf tip using a rope is a natural for San Benito County.
