Former professional golfer and broadcaster Ken Venturi past way on May 17, we was 82.  I had the pleasure to speak with Venturi several times during my years with the Pebble Beach Company.

During the time I was the Head Golf Professional at Del Monte, I discovered Venturi held the course record. He shot the course record while stationed at Fort Ord.

Venturi, though, requested that the record was not announced because didn’t want anybody to know after he snuck out from Fort Ord to play golf while on duty.

During one of the Pebble Beach AT&T Pro-Ams, I asked Venturi if the story was true and he confirmed it with a smile and shared the story on air that week. Just a couple of years back, I received a copy of his book “Getting Up and Down, My 60 years in Golf, and I found it to be a very interesting and a touching read. I, as many in the golf world, will miss Ken Venturi.

 Thin Divots

First of all, thin divots are not necessary a bad thing. There are two types of golf swings, diggers and pickers. Diggers, like Alex Rodriguez and Jason Sims, have swings that tend to take deep and large divots. Pickers, like Pat Larkin and myself, take little to no divots.

Most golfers think if their divots are small or nonexistent, they must be lifting at impact. If you normally take a good size divot but are now hitting thin shots on a regular basis, you may have a swing that is now too flat. You may be standing too far from the ball, or your club is coming into the ball from too far inside on your downswing.

Many times it is a combination of two or three of these flaws that cause your thin shots.

For help to regain your normal angle of attack, set up a lesson with one of our local PGA teaching professionals. We would love to help you.
