Mark O’Meara, five-time winner of the Pebble Beach National Pro/Am and 16 tour wins, made a very interesting statement regarding winning on the tour during a recent clinic at Pebble Beach. Even though he has won many tournaments, the percentage of wins compared to the number of tournaments he entered is very low.

So he believes when you have a chance to win, you should go for it with all costs. If you play too defensively, the rare opportunity to win may slip by. This applies to tournament play at all levels and even when you’re attempting to shot past your personal best score. But this does not mean you should take high risk shots you’ve never hit before.

Giving your best effort toward a win or best score is part of the joy and thrill of golf and competition, so give it your best and enjoy the opportunity.

How many yards to the flag?

Finding the correct yards to the flag is now getting even easier.

The latest product to hit the golf courses is nothing new but it’s just done in a new way. Many golfers carry a rangefinder made by companies like Bushnell. These are very easy to use and extremely accurate.

One of the problems some of the golfers face is trying to get a fixed reading while their hands are shaking. Now different flag companies are embedding reflectors into or on the top of the flagstick.

These reflectors are easier for rangefinders to pick up over a flag or flagstick, especially with trees and branches in the background. So if you carry a rangefinder, be sure to ask the pro shop before you tee off and ask if they provide reflectors on or in their flagsticks.

At Ridgemark, the reflectors are on the top of the flagstick, but our driving range has several flagsticks with the reflectors. We want to see what model our golfers preferred.

Hats, Caps, and Sunscreen

As the days warm up and the sun is bright, don’t forget to wear your favorite lucky hat and plenty of sunscreen. When the sun is overhead, protect your head and arms. Four hours in the sun playing golf can be hard on our skin, so enjoy the heat we’ve been missing, but put on your protection from the sun.
