Hollister – A Hollister man was flown to the hospital with a broken leg and head trauma after being hit by a car while he was walking in the middle of McCloskey Road Saturday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Manuel Mendez, 25, was walking in and out of the road around 8:30pm while having an argument with some other family members, according to the CHP. One of Mendez’s family members drove alongside the man with their hazard lights on while flashing their high beams to alert oncoming vehicles, according to the CHP.

But 21-year-old Sacramento resident Leah Dixon, who was driving her 1996 Honda eastbound on McCloskey Road, didn’t see Mendez in the middle of the road until it was too late. Dixon slammed on the brakes and swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting Mendez but couldn’t stop in time. The impact broke the front windshield of Dixon’s car, and a minor complaint of pain sent her to Hazel Hawkins Hospital to be treated, according to the CHP.

Mendez was flown to Stanford Medical Center for a fracture to his left leg and head trauma.
