A stabbing early Monday morning sent a Hollister man to the hospital with several deep stab wounds – the only stabbing related to the Hollister Independence Day Rally weekend, according to police.

George Costa, 39, was stabbed sometime before 6 a.m. at his residence at 1360 Sunnyslope Rd. by transient and parolee Danny Peliaz, whom Costa had let stay at the rear of his property for the Fourth of July weekend, said Hollister Police Sgt. Ray Wood.

“He wanted him to leave, so he reminded him once, came back and reminded him a second time and his response was to stab him,” Wood said.

After Peliaz stabbed Costa at least three times, once in the back and two times in his legs, Costa’s girlfriend drove him to Hazel Hawkins Hospital and the police were notified at 5:55 a.m. by hospital staff, Wood said.

None of Costa’s wounds were life-threatening and he was conscious and walking around at the hospital, but a doctor wanted to give him an X-ray to make sure he didn’t have a punctured lung from Peliaz stabbing him in the back, Wood said.

Police are unsure what kind of knife was used in the attack.

Peliaz resides somewhere in the San Jose area, and fled in a gray Kia after stabbing Costa, Wood said.

Peliaz has not been apprehended and police believe he is headed back to the San Jose area.
