Gilroy – Gavilan’s Seth Hudson, a San Benito High product, received top honors on the All-Coast Conference team. Hudson and West Valley’s Chase Perez, a catcher from Live Oak, were tied in votes for the first team selection at the catcher position.

Hudson caught all but two of Gavilan’s games this year and still maintained a high offensive output. He led the Rams with a .398 batting average and tied with Josh Torrise for the team lead in home runs with three. He had an on-base average of .544.

“Seth had an unbelievable year,” said Gavilan coach Neal Andrade. “The physical and mental demands of playing catcher can take away from your offense, but he didn’t let that happen. It seemed like he had two or three hits every game.”

Hudson was in Louisiana this week, meeting with the University of New Orleans, a Division 1 school.

“My main goal is not only to compete for a championship but also to have our athletes transfer to a four-year and continue to play,” Andrade said.

Representing Gavilan on the second team were Efrain Ruiz, Scott Mead and Brian Rossi.

Ruiz got a late start to the season after having eligibility issues, but he came on strong during the conference portion of the schedule. He batted .327 and was third on the team in RBIs with 22.

“He was our main guy in the 3-hole,” Andrade said of his infielder. “He was a good teammate. He was a little banged up, but he still had several clutch hits and RBIs.”

Mead played every inning at second base for the Rams and was second in batting average at .355.

“He was a real team leader,” Andrade said. “If you were to hear anyone on the field, it was him. He was very vocal. He loves the game and did whatever it took to win.”

Rossi was Gavilan’s work horse on the mound despite coming off surgery in the offseason. He pitched 81 innings in 15 games and finished with a 6-4 record. He is looking at attending Chico State.

“He had to eat up a lot innings,” Andrade said. “He pitched in a lot of our big games and was the Saturday guy the first part of season. When your thin in the bullpen like we were, you have to eat up some innings.”

Shayne Christman received honorable mention for the Rams.

“He played a minimal roll last year, so we didn’t know how he would do this year,” Andrade said. “But he came around real nicely. He was a contact guy and always put the bat on the ball. He was one of our top hitters all year. Shayne made all the routine plays at third base. He took the position and ran with it.”

Other local players receiving honors were West Valley’s Doug Porras (first team infielder from Live Oak), Dave Massinger (second team pitcher from Live Oak). Ben Hemeon (honorable mention from Gilroy) and San Jose City’s Anthony Synegal (first team first baseman from San Benito).
