Local Scene: Celebrate Earth Day April 19 in downtown Hollister

Celebrate Earth Day

San Benito County’s Earth Day celebration will take place 11am-2pm April 19 in downtown Hollister. The event will include booths hosted by local clubs, businesses and organizations; games; art; performances and free recycling programs. More than 30 booths will offer environmental programs, resources and fun, interactive games and activities for participants of all ages. 

The Earth Day festivities are sponsored by the Hollister Downtown Association and San Benito County Integrated Waste Management. The event is free, family friendly and open to everyone. “Together, we’re encouraging residents of San Benito County to take good care of the world around us and to develop more sustainable, eco-conscious ways of living,” says a press release from San Benito County. 

Booths and featured activities scheduled at the event include vermicomposting with Master Gardener Otis Johnson; Recology poster contest winners announced at 1pm; and electric vehicle test driving and car show.

April 19 marks the 55th anniversary of Earth Day, says the press release. The theme for this year’s event is “Our Power, Our Planet.” 

“When we make a global effort to unite behind renewable energy, we make an effort to stop global warming and minimize the environmental footprint on our planet,” says the press release.

Weekly bike ride

Join others at 8am every Saturday, for a 22-mile bike ride. Meet at  Off the Chain bike shop, 101 McCray St., #101, Hollister. They ride out Santa Ana Road to Tres Pinos, drop down onto Southside Road, and back to the shop. Moderate to fast pace. They do regroup. Daughters meet

The Daughters of the American Revolution, with members from Hollister, Gilroy, San Juan Bautista and Morgan Hill, meet at 10am the second Saturday of each month (September thru May).

Farmers’ market is Wednesday

Spring is here. The longer warmer days allow farmers to grow and harvest more of the delicious foods that San Benito County residents count on.  

As a result, locals and visitors can come out and find some deals on the best produce available at the downtown Hollister farmers’ market every Wednesday from 3-7pm. The next market will take place April 16. 

In addition to fresh produce vendors, there are recipes and food preparation tips from different organizations looking to help you live a healthier life. 

Always at the farmers’ market are vendors with interesting locally made goods that make great gifts.
