Four San Benito High School students have been selected by League of United Latin American Citizens Education Service Centers (www.lnesc.org/) and are being sponsored by the local council in one of the nation’s longest running and most respected Latino youth leadership programs.

The Washington Youth Leadership Seminar is a four-day annual event bringing 50 emerging student leaders in grades 11 and 12 from across the United States and Puerto Rico to Washington, DC. While in the nation’s capitol, the four SBHS students and other students will work on public policy issues with national leaders from Congress, corporate America and other public and private institutions and provide input on issues important to the Latino community. Applying for selection included completing a 400 word essay on “MyCommunity Involvement and Leadership Skills”and competing with other nationwide students.

Several students from San Benito County have had the privilege of attending these seminars in the past, however national LULAC has never allocated four slots for local students until now. All lodging and meals costs are being covered by LULAC and a stipend will be given. The students are responsible for their airfare and any spending money. San Benito County students attending are Francisco Lezama, senior and president of San Benito County LULAC Youth Council; Samantha Barrientos, junior; Elizabeth Zepeda, senior; and Eduardo Navarro, senior at SBHS.

LULAC said it believes in reaching out to Latino youth for purposes of raising awareness and helping them advance in education and gain leadership skills, as proof of the commitment, LULAC will again sponsor the 15th annual Student Leadership Conference at SBHS on Oct. 22 with many guest speakers on various careers and educational opportunities. Parents and students from sixth to 12th graders are invited to attend.

Founded 82 years ago, LULAC is the largest and oldest Latino Organization in the United States. LULAC advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, health and civil rights of Latino Americans through community-based programs operating at more than 900 LULAC councils nationwide (http://lulac.org/). Locally, San Benito County LULAC is known for its advocacy in education for all students.
