For the second year in a row, Hollister High’s Octavio Lucatero was one match away from placing at the CIF State Wrestling Meet at the University of the Pacific’s Spanos Center in Stockton last weekend.

Lucatero, at 135 pounds, was eliminated by Jason Williams of Clovis Saturday morning when Williams caught Lucatero for a pin.

The Balers’ Brent Kelsey, at 125 pounds, lost his first two matches – 7-5 to eventual fourth place finisher Lewis Gonzalez of Turlock and to Danny Brito of Santa Ana by pin.

Lucatero took care of his first opponent on Friday – Nick Chen of Mission San Jose – 7-1. Lucatero then lost a tight 4-3 decision to third place finisher Jeremiah Davis of Monte Vista (San Diego). Lucatero bounced back to beat Armando Palomo 7-2. On Saturday, Lucatero stayed alive with a 5-3 win over Raphael Reynolds of San Fernando before losing to Williams.

“I hope Octavio can learn from his experience at the state meet the past two years,” said Baler head coach Matt Olejnik.

“If one can’t strike a fire in his belly after seeing what it takes to win at the state meet, then it probably won’t ever happen.”
