Assemblyman Luis Alejo, D-Salinas, was presented with a “Promotor de Oportunidades” Award for outstanding leadership Thursday at a dinner in Sacramento hosted by the national League of United Latin American Citizens organization.
“It’s an honor to receive such an award,” Alejo said at the meeting, according to a statement. “To me, this award is more than just recognition for my work in the Latino community.”
Alejo sponsored several bills this year focused on immigration and Latino issues that were eventually signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown. Alejo’s bills included AB 60, which granted driver’s licenses in California to undocumented immigrants. Another bill, AB 10, will raise the California minimum wage to $10 an hour by 2016.
“As we approach the upcoming legislative year, I hope to continue leading the fight for social and economic equality,” he said.
