The League of United Latin American Citizens is hosting its 21st
annul Hispanic Women in Action Reception, Aug. 27, when the
committee will recognize 2011 LULAC Woman of the Year Cecilia
Preciado Burciaga.
The League of United Latin American Citizens is hosting its 21st annul Hispanic Women in Action Reception, Aug. 27, when the committee will recognize 2011 LULAC Woman of the Year Cecilia Preciado Burciaga.

The event will be held at the Cedar House banquet room at 6 p.m. Tickets are $40 a person and proceeds benefit scholarships.

Burciaga, an education consultant, is being honored because her education background has allowed her to encourage numerous students to complete higher education. Some of her former students are leaders and role models in their communities today. She is a former Associate Dean and Acting Senior Associate Provost at Stanford University. She also has an extensive national and statewide network of working with university administrations and legislators.

Burciaga has a long list of honors to her credit. She was inducted into the LULAC Women’s Hall of Fame in Cincinnati this year. She was also appointed to the Presidential Commission on the Education of Hispanic Americans from 1994-2001. She has more than 30 state and national community awards for contributions in education and has spoken at more than 100 colleges, government or community meetings. She is a former board member of the United Way Santa Clara and the County Red Cross Board in Palo Alto.

She earned her bachelor’s degree from California State University, Fullerton in 1967, before she completed a high school teaching credential. After that, she went on to the University of California, Riverside, where she earned a master’s in Policy Studies in Higher Education. Later she enrolled at the University of La Verne to earn an educational doctorate through the Educational Leadership Program. She also completed the Stanford Graduate School of Business Executive Program in Change Management certification and the Harvard Executive Leadership Program.

She is currently serving on the adjunct faculty at San Jose State University. From 1994-2003, she served as a founding administrator at the California State University, Monterey Bay campus, working as Associate Vice President of Student Affairs. From 1974 to 1994 she worked at Stanford University in a variety of administrative positions.

Her earliest experience in education came when she worked as a lecturer at the University of California, Riverside, while she earned her master’s degree. After that she worked as a high school teacher in Chino.

The keynote speaker this year will be Carmelita Garcia, the mayor of Pacific Grove.

The event will also include a Cancer Survivor and Memorial Tribute to Marie Ureno and Sylvia de Luna, two women who have battled cancer and survived.

Entertainment will be provided by “Cafecito” with Ruben Garcia, of San Jose.

The annual reception began in 1988 as a way to focus on and honor Latinas in the community who have placed importance on education and served as role models for younger women. The proceeds of the event go to a scholarship fund. To date, the reception has raised more than $142,000 for scholarships for graduating Latino students from the community.
