An unidentified man was found dead in the middle of a road Sunday night on the west side, and Hollister police continue to investigate the incident that is being called a hit-and-run.
The fatality, which has no reported witnesses, happened at the 800 block of Fourth Street, Hollister Police spokesman Sgt. David Westrick said. Police arrived at the scene around 8 p.m. and found a man lying in the middle of the road. The man had a fatal injury to his head, Westrick said.
An hour after the incident, a person called the police department and identified himself or herself as the one who hit the man with a vehicle, Westrick said. Police recovered the vehicle but are still investigating the crime.
“Right now, we are still in the middle of our investigation,” he said.
The man had no identification, and the county coroner’s office had yet to identify him as of Monday morning, sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Roy Iler said.
