Well, it looks like cooler heads are suddenly not prevailing on the San Benito County growth control issue.

Despite the valiant efforts of Joe and Julie Morris and their positive-approach workshops and follow-up plans to bring both sides of the issue together, two lawsuits have busted the war open again.

The latest litigation was filed this week, accompanied by a two-volume investigation apparently jump-started by developers that oppose Measure G, which is still on the ballot for March.

Another lawsuit from the anti-growth side also sprung up recently, backed by a national environmental protection group.

The latest one wants the courts to take Measure G off the ballot, which is where the County Board of Supervisors put it after originally passing it.

Confusion? You bet. Bad blood? It’s flowing.

Mud-slinging, criminal accusations, finger-pointing. It is now a bad scene all the way around if you judge it by the recent developments.

The losers in all of this, of course, will be the general populous of San Benito County and its future generations.

Mixing flimsy criminal accusations and character assassination amid the anti-Measure G lawsuit is scandalous in itself.

There is still time for cooler heads to prevail and we hope the March vote will survive the litigious assaults from both sides of the clouded opinion and self-interest ledger.

The future of San Benito County should not be decided by a gaggle of expensive lawyers and outsider judges in a courtroom.

The efforts of those who want to work together to seek a solution and come up with a real plan should continue. Education and accurate information should overcome greed and lies.

Measure G should be voted on and then we should all move forward in a positive way regardless of the tally – led by the righteous and well-informed people of this proud county.
