Annual Mission 10 run is scheduled for this weekend in San Juan Bautista

The 29th annual Mission 10 event is scheduled for Saturday in San Juan Bautista.

The yearly January event showcases some of the fittest area residents, but it also highlights the beauty of the Mission City, as runners find their way through the streets of San Juan, ending at the Old Mission San Juan Bautista.

The event will once again benefit community service projects from the Rotary Club of Hollister. There will be 10-mile and 5K races, along with the Elliott Swank Memorial 1-Mile Kid’s Fun Run.

Entry fees are $5 for the fun run – with three or more children from the same family charged $12 total – while all other runners will pay $30. Checks should be made payable to the Rotary Club of Hollister.

With the exception of the fun run, participants will receive a long-sleeve race shirt. Trophies, medals and ribbons will be handed out, too.

In the end, though, the event is established to benefit Rotary, which plans to focus the Mission 10 fundraising efforts toward scholarships for high school students.

Run organizer Bill Tiffany noted that the past couple of years the event has attracted more than 500 participants.

“And we’re always hoping for more,” he said. “This year, the (pre-registration) is high. The weather looks good.”

Tiffany himself has been involved since the mid-1980s. He said it not only attracts some runners from the greater Bay Area, but that it also maintains a hometown feel.

“It’s got a real small-town, small-race feel even though it’s growing in size,” he said. “There’s a lot of camaraderie.”

There is plenty for the whole family as well. Tiffany pointed out that one part of the event that doesn’t gain as much publicity is the Fun Run for kids.

“The other part that’s nice,” he said. “after it’s over, people can have lunch and kind of kick back on the streets of San Juan Bautista.”
