A Santa Cruz County sheriff’s patrol car was targeted with a homemade Molotov cocktail Sunday on an Aromas street, the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Deputies were called at 12:15 a.m. Sunday to the 400 block of Rose Avenue in Aromas, the office reported.

The device, which did not successfully explode, was retrieved by deputies and taken for evidence, sheriff’s Lt. Roy Iler said.

“Whoever made it didn’t know what they were doing,” Iler said.

The Santa Cruz County patrol car was taken for evidence as well, Iler said.

Iler said a passerby saw the bottle and rag ablaze under the patrol car. The witness stopped, took the device from underneath the patrol car and called 911, Iler said.

The incident is being investigated as arson, according to the sheriff’s office.

The office will send the device to the California Department of Justice to be analyzed, Iler said.

There are no suspects.

Anyone with information about this incident should call the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office at 831-636-4080.
