It may be a fact, or it may be merely a stereotype, but it does seem that American men enjoy attending car shows and eating meat grilled over a barbecue. Recognizing this, Morgan Hill Community Christian (305 W. Main Ave.) will host a Father’s Day celebration combining both of these popular elements.
Local residents are invited to attend the Third Annual Fathers Day Car Show from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Morgan Hill loves its car shows – and this one seems to be a great fit: Not too big and not too small. And admission is free. Those in attendance will have an opportunity to vote for “Best of Show”; the top three vote-getters will be awarded cash prizes.
At 11 a.m., everyone is invited to attend the church’s worship service, which features lively contemporary music and a relevant message preached by Pastor Kyle Windsor. This Sunday is the start of a new and timely sermon series called “RPM” (for Relationships, Passion and Marriage). During the service children will be able to attend a special worship program created for their age group.
At noon, there will be a barbecue featuring pulled pork sandwiches, chicken and hot dogs, accompanied by a variety of side dishes and beverages. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children.
There will also be fun and entertainment for all ages: Oldies music with a DJ, a bounce house resembling a monster truck, cotton candy and snow cones.
Community Christian is a multi-campus church with worship services in Morgan Hill and Campbell. The original Morgan Hill congregation is known for its outreach programs serving the South Valley community:
• In January 2012, it became part of the Community Suppers program that provides free hot meals to local residents. Nutritious food is served every Thursday evening at 6 p.m. Diners are treated respectfully with “no questions asked, no judgments made.” In the first year of operation, more than 4,000 meals were served.
• Another successful program is Kids Club, offered in cooperation with the adjacent P.A. Walsh School. Each Wednesday afternoon during the school year, Community Christian volunteers provide fun and educational activities using a value-based curriculum.
• New in May is an outreach to the Hispanic community, a Bible study and worship service conducted in Spanish. Meeting at the church on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m., it offers a time to listen to God’s word, give gratitude for God’s blessings and pray in a language that is more comfortable for many local residents. There is ample opportunity to enjoy fellowship and refreshments before the 9 p.m. closing time.
