I was recently honored to receive two design awards at the Decorating Den Interiors 30th International Dream Room competition at its 45th annual conference held recently in San Diego.
My window treatment designs were selected for second and third places in that category by a panel of U.S. and Canadian interior design journalists, including magazines such as House Beautiful, Good Housekeeping and Better Homes and Gardens. Window treatments are one of my favorite areas of design so I was thrilled!
My second place design reflected the room’s whimsical hand painted murals in the hardware design. A lovely sheer light olive green fabric is casually attached with medallions of birds, grapes and leaves. The finials for the side panels are birds singing from the branches. The goal was a light-hearted focal point which also minimized glare but still allowed the lovely view to be seen.
My third place design was luxurious black silk velvet draperies and valance trimmed in golds, beiges and browns for an Art Deco style master bathroom. The cord-trimmed valance repeated the cord motif in the wallpaper and the gold medallions added the right bit of elegance and drama. Privacy and sun protection were an issue so we lined the draperies with black-out lining.
Windows are usually one of the largest architectural features in a room and often the most neglected. Whether you’re looking for treatments that provide privacy and protect your rooms from the sun or one that makes a design statement, there is a multitude of styles of drapery hardware, fabrics, shades and designs to choose from. Cover up those naked windows!
