The Southside School District was closed Friday morning in response to mudslides on the road leading into the school.
“It’s a matter of safety for the parents driving in and out,” said Eric Johnson, the superintendent and principal of the site. “About 5 o’clock (Thursday) the Southside Road hillside started falling down on the road.”
As of 10 a.m. this morning, the road was still closed but the hope was to get it open by tomorrow, Johnson said.
“They keep moving the dirt and it keeps sliding down again,” he said.
It’s not the first time heavy rains have caused the school to close its doors. About five to seven years, the district weathered a similar situation, Johnson said.
This year, parents were notified of the closure through an automated phone call, the school website and Facebook pages, and through team leaders in each classroom.
“As of this moment, I envision back to normal on Monday,” Johnson said. “Keep your fingers crossed.”
