The San Benito County Historical Society on Friday is showcasing the Gilmore Family – its members arrived here in the late 19th century – to celebrate Black History Month.
The historical society is encouraging residents to attend a “Celebrate Black History Month” event from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Historical Society Museum, 498 Fifth St.
The Gilmore family was among the first groups of settlers to the Hollister area when they arrived on train in February 1889, according to the historical society.
In an announcement, the historical society had this to say: “The Historical Society is hosting an Open House at 498 Fifth Street in honor of the African Americans that came to this community before 1900 looking for a better way of life. Learn details about their lives and discover the stories that have become part of our history. Refreshments will be served.”
