The Gilroy Mustangs, which lost 5-2 in late March to the San Benito High boys tennis team, returned the favor Monday with a surprising 4-3 victory at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister.

The ‘Balers (9-3 TCAL, 10-4) were winners of five straight matches and had only lost a pair of TCAL meetings to top dog Salinas. But the Mustangs stole two close matches that were decided by third-set tiebreakers, and went on to upset second-place San Benito.

At No. 3 singles, Gilroy’s Oliver Drewery defeated Kyle Skinner 7-6 (7-1), 4-6 and 10-4 in the tiebreaker, while at No. 4 singles, Ryan Azad downed ‘Baler Austin Pan 0-6, 6-4 and 10-3 in the third-set tiebreaker.

Top singles player Vinh Vong won his match over San Benito’s Derek Panger 6-0, 6-2, while No. 2 Mark Tobias scored the lone singles victory for the ‘Balers, defeating Matt Chan 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles, San Benito’s No. 1 pairing of Jon Rudolfs and Michael Jensen beat Mitch Souza and Andrew Costa 6-2, 6-3, while teammates Conner Bray and Tony Culler staved off Zach Singh and Jared Besson 4-6, 6-1 and 10-7 in the third-set tiebreaker.

Gilroy’s only win in doubles came at the No. 3 spot, where Joseph Leong and Kevin Lee defeated Thomas Parcell and Eric Johnson 6-4, 6-4.

In an exhibition, ‘Balers Josh Greenwood and Jacob Panger teamed up to down Bobby Kwong and Alex Medina 6-1, 6-0.

San Benito will visit Palma today, Tuesday, in Salinas at 4 p.m., before it begins the TCAL Finals on Thursday and Friday.

The TCAL Finals, which will be held at Everett Alvarez High, will commence at 1 p.m., on both days.
