San Benito on list of 25 counties eligible for jail funds

With jail overcrowding a problem that is only expected to get worse as the state moves lower-risk inmates from state prisons to the counties where they committed their crimes, San Benito County Sheriff Darren Thompson is hopeful a jail expansion grant can stem that coming tide.

Hollister City Council members on Monday voted 3-2 to approve new traffic impact fees for developers in a move that would drastically drop levies for residential units while spiking currently non-existing fees for commercial projects and others. 

Council rejects 24-hour smoking ban in home daycares

The Hollister City Council on Monday rejected a proposed ordinance from the San Benito County Public Health Department that would have banned smoking from licensed home daycares 24 hours a day.

Hollister amends rules to allow food, drinks in dog park

The Hollister City Council had held off an official approval of rules for the new dog park at the airport because they had barred people from bringing food and beverages into the park, but officials Monday removed the provision and approved the policies.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said that on the morning of Nov. 9, people across the state will hear tones, or see a test message across their screens, saying "this is a test."

Meningitis unconfirmed in death; unrelated case at SBHS

San Benito County Public Health officials confirmed that a Ladd Lane Elementary School student was treated for bacterial meningitis last week, but said that so far the doctors treating the child said that the test results for possible meningitis have been inconclusive, according to an announcement from the agency.
