I’m a lucky girl. With Father’s Day upon us, it reminds me just how blessed I am to have had not one, but two dads mold me into the woman I am today.

They say that father-daughter relationships are the hardest, and my dad and I are no exception. I once heard him tell my mom that he felt like he could not talk to me without me crying (and at the time, this was true). But in the end you get past all the hurt and the awkwardness, and underneath, the foundation of it all, is love.

Growing up I remember going fishing, camping and playing catch with my dad.

On this Father’s Day, we want to take this time to honor our dad as we approach 20 years you have been gone.

As kids morph into adults, sometimes both the kids and the parents miss it, it happens so fast. Just ask my dad. Or me, for that matter.

Whenever my brother and I got into trouble as kids, there was always a sigh of relief when Mom said, “Just wait until your father gets home!”

When I see the hills behind our house glow at sunset, hear a mockingbird sing or see the stars at night, I think of my father.

Dads sometimes get the short end of the stick—especially when it comes to the one day a year designated just for them: Father’s Day. There typically are no flowers sent to workplaces, no hand-delivered candy. Perhaps there’s a card along with a tie or some cologne that will remain in the bathroom for years.
