A surprise at the end of 152
If you haven’t driven the Pacheco Pass Highway to the Central Valley lately, you are in for a pleasant surprise. You can enjoy the lovely green hills on this side of the pass while also carefully watching the huge trucks passing each other on the upgrade at 35 and 40 mph. Beyond the San Luis Reservoir and Los Banos, you are almost back in America’s Midwest flatland farm country. Mile after mile of crops, fruit trees and an occasional goat or alpaca farm spread out on both sides of the highway. Old Glory flutters every few miles and the radio stations morph into religious programs or conservative talk shows. A road sign says it all: Indiana Avenue.

Chuckie and Buddy: Loved and missed forever
My Chuckie of almost 17 years was my life. He was the most sweet, loving, caring cockapoo a person could ever ask for. He gave me strength during my mother’s heart attack. He faithfully followed me around while I grieved for my husband Leonard at the time when he had a cardiac arrest. I would find him faithfully behind our door waiting for me daily until I came home from work. I could hear his barks greeting me as I would drive up. He slept in my bed with me every night and sat next to me downstairs as we would watch TV together. We would take walks together, visit the beach and even attend baseball games together.
Get outdoors and meet our fall visitors
Every September I look for the white-crowned sparrows to arrive. A small flock takes up residence each fall in an overgrown Lady Banks rose that covers the side of my neighbor's garage. They join the house finches, chestnut-backed chickadees and lesser goldfinches at my feeders. White-crowned sparrows are distinctive, with a narrow white stripe on the top of their heads, black stripes on either side of the white “crown” and broad white eyebrows.
