Impassioned monologues from a handful of public speakers failed to persuade the Gavilan College School Board to reverse an “appalling” $42,000 raise, which the board approved seven months ago for college President Steve Kinsella.

Strangers reach out to share in sadness

If I’ve learned anything through the years, I’ve learned that sometimes, when you’re in a tough spot, you have to let others in, let others shine a light on your dark path. Although I’m not one to rely heavily on others, even in difficult times, I know that my family and close friends are willing to help in any way and anytime they’re needed.

POTW: Cosmo

Cosmo has lots of energy, loves to play with toys, is very friendly and good with other dogs. He has been at the San Martin Animal Shelter since April and would love to find a happy home. If you are interested in adopting this or any other animal at the shelter, please call (408) 686-3900.

Closer to home the City of San Jose overwhelmingly approved pension reform, Measure B, that gives current city workers "the option of switching to a lower pension or staying in the current plan and paying off pension debt with annual contribution increases" - the city was sued immediately thereafter. While many voters, including me, support serious public pension reform, it is a mistake to blame the entire problem on the unions; doing so would let the other actors - the employees, the elected officials, and ultimately the public - off the hook.
