Solar ‘smart park’ getting close to groundbreaking
A year after developer Megawatt Energy submitted a preliminary application to build a solar energy facility just outside of the Hollister city limits, near Union and Cienega roads, the project is getting closer to breaking ground.
San Benito courthouse construction to begin soon
Construction on the new $36 million San Benito County Courthouse on Fourth Street is "imminent," with activity expected on the long-vacant three-acre site expected within the next few weeks, according to court officials.
HSD, classified union reach agreement after impasse
After more than six months of negotiating, Hollister School District officials and the California School Employees Association chapter 625, which represents classified staff, came to an agreement on an employee contract that included concessions from both sides. The Hollister School Board ratified the contract at a special meeting Feb. 7.

BIRTHDAY: Mariano Garduque: Mariano Garduque celebrated his 100th birthday with family and friends. He was born Feb. 16, 1912 in the Philippines. He has four brothers and two sisters. He came to America in 1928 at 16 years old to make a better life for himself, as his family was very poor. Mariano worked hard in the fields for 30 years. In the late ‘50s, he farmed the land he bought in Gilroy. In the ‘60s, he started his own gardening business and worked well into his 80s. He made many trips to the Philippines to visit family and has five children he is very proud of. Mariano is a devout Christian man, enjoys fishing and spending time with his family.
A month later, CHP probe into Union Road fatality unfinished
The California Highway Patrol's investigation remains unfinished into a Jan. 13 fatal car wreck on Union Road involving suspected driving under the influence, according to an agency spokesman.

Airplane loses power on takeoff, hits grass bank off runway
Two people escaped injury Tuesday when an airplane ran off a runway on takeoff at the Hollister airport and crashed into a small grass bank.
