California's $98.5-billion bullet train project has become "increasingly risky" because of uncertainty about where the money will come from to finish even the first phase, the state auditor warned Tuesday.

Accused child killer’s trial delayed until March
The trial for accused child killer Cheryl L. Busch has been delayed from its February date until late March.
Cemetery homicide suspect waives hearing
The local man accused of a stabbing homicide at a Hollister cemetery has waived his right to a preliminary hearing and is set for another court appearance in February, according to records.
Updated: Crash victim had underage conviction in county
Although the suspect in this month’s fatal crash on Union Road would be considered guilty of driving under the influence with a 0.01 percent blood-alcohol concentration, the California Highway Patrol is alleging her BAC was also above the legal limit for adults. Local court records also show that the victim in the Jan. 13 accident had a 2008 conviction for drunken driving while under age 21 and was placed on probation for three years.
Hollister school bus service on chopping block
The Hollister School District Board of Trustees will meet Jan. 24 to discuss steps to deal with a complete cut in state funding for school transportation, while the San Benito High School District plans to maintain its program in full.
Briefs: Women’s Club holding student art contest
The Women's Club of Hollister will hold its annual student art contest at its Feb. 8 meeting. Students in kindergarten through high school may enter art work. Photography may be submitted from middle school through high school students. Photos should be matted with no glass frames. The deadline to have artwork picked up for the contest is Feb. 6.
Rain adds to low season total
Although there was some rain over the weekend, it hasn’t been enough to get the Hollister area back on track and closer to its averages for this time of year.
