Wide receiver Randy Moss’ last Bay Area employment didn’t go so well with the Raiders. Come Monday, he will visit the 49ers, ESPN and the NFL Network reported.
Moss, 35, is attempting to return from a one-season hiatus, having last played in 2010 for three teams: The Patriots, Vikings and Titans. He began his tryout tour recently with the New Orleans Saints, who also will be one of the 49ers’ chief competitors in terms of acquiring wide receivers when free agency opens Tuesday.
Moss spent his first seven seasons with the Vikings and made five Pro Bowls there. Then he got traded to the Raiders for the 2005 and 2006 seasons. After catching only three touchdown passes in 13 games in his final Raiders season, Moss got dealt (for a fourth-round pick) to the Patriots and set a NFL record with 23 touchdown receptions.
His 153 career touchdown catches are tied with Terrell Owens for second-most in NFL history behind Jerry Rice’s 197.
The 49ers have only three wide receivers under contract for 2012: Michael Crabtree, Kyle Williams and Joe Hastings. Joshua Morgan is slated for free agency but coach Jim Harbaugh voiced a desire to re-sign Morgan after he sustained a season-ending leg fracture Oct. 9 vs. Tampa. Ted Ginn Jr. is also a pending free agent.
