158430~Stop CAFTA, another phony free trade agreement—We must
contact our congressional representatives immediately and demand
they vote to stop CAFTA, the Central American Free Trade Agreement,
reportedly coming to a vote this month.
CAFTA (Central American Free Trade Agreement) must be stopped to preserve our sovereignty and the freedom to farm, manufacture, and work at living wages with good working conditions. CAFTA is a power grab using our tax money funneled into the World Bank and the IMF for big corporations and agri-businesses. It is not to help the poor in poorer nations. This is attested by the farmers in El Salvador who are loosing their farms under the CAFTA agreement already signed in El Salvador. El Salvador’s farms are being outsourced to agri-business. Likewise, in the United States, since NAFTA was signed 33,000 small farmers have gone out of business. This is approximately six time the rate prior to NAFTA. Farmers who have survived have found the price of corn drppped by 33 percent, the price of wheat by 42 percent and the price of soybeans by 34 percent. Tariff proof crops are now being dumped into the United States by agri-businesses which are produced by workers who are employed for next to nothing. Brazil is being allowed to dump Ethanol into U.S. markets undercutting US grain farmers production for Ethanol. Manufacturing plants are constantly closing and moving out of the United States leaving American workers unemployed. In one state alone, Illinois has lost 143,000 manufacturing jobs from Jan. 2000 to Nov. 2004. The United States as a whole has lost 4.7 million jobs from 1980 to the present because of so called “free trade” agreements. CAFTA is a transfer of wealth from America’s workers/taxpayers to big bankers and corporations who claim it is all for the poor. Tell that to the farmers in El Salvador who are becoming poorer under CAFTA! And since when is it legal to take from American’s the fruit of their labors for a transfer to other nations? Contact your U.S. Senators and representative today to vote No on CAFTA which is scheduled to be voted on in June 2005. See www.STOPCAFTA.com or call 1-800-JBS-USA1
