was selected for a prestigious $20,000 scholarship.

Vargas will be using the scholarship to attend UC Santa Cruz in Fall 2007, where she will major in biology and pursue a career in Pharmacology.
The 2007 Karl S. Pister Leadership award was established to help students from community colleges transfer to University of California, Santa Cruz.
Candidates for the scholarship are nominated by the presidents of the 13 regional community colleges eligible for the award, and winners are selected by the UC Santa Cruz Chancellor.
Vargas is a first-generation college student, and hopes to one day serve underrepresented communities. At Gavilan College, she participated in Pre-Health Club, and served as a tutor in mathematics, chemistry and biology.
