Casa de Fruta is giving away 1,770 scholastic books for school libraries. The Gilroy company’s donation and charity department wanted to help out a local organization.
“We asked, ‘who is in the most need of books – who could benefit the most?'” said Suzan (Zanger) Slater, a partner with Casa de Fruta. “We wanted to know how we could better serve the community.”
Casa de Fruta purchased the books and has tried to inform all local schools in San Benito, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara and Monterey counties.
Anyone can enter a school, but they can do so only once and only one set of books will be given out per school. People can enter at Casa de Sweets through Oct. 31. Winners will be notified Nov. 7.
The giveaway was not a reaction struggle with state budget cuts, Slater said, even though most schools will use the books to supplement those cuts.
“Any way businesses in the community can help support school libraries is a wonderful help to libraries, especially in view of this year’s drastic budget cuts,” said Cindy Brown, Gabilan Hills School librarian. “I encourage all librarians to help their schools out (and enter the giveaway).”
Casa de Fruta employees have received positive acknowledgment on the need for such generosity, Slater said.
“As far as our feedback goes, it’s impressed upon us how important it (the giveaway) is,” she said. “We didn’t expect such resounding, positive feedback.”
Casa de Fruta is located on Highway 152 eight miles north of Hollister. People entering a school in the giveaway will receive a free Fun Pass. The pass includes a train ride on Casa de Choo Choo, one admission to Casa de Zoo and one bag of popcorn. For more information, call 408-842-7282.
