Editorial: It’s a time to offer support for family, friends of Heather Carroll
Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Heather Alaina Carroll, whose body turned up early Saturday at a home in the 2100 block of Cerra Vista Drive after her suspected killer surrendered following a long standoff.
Water Cooler: Do Americans count on style too much in debates?
Around the Water Cooler panelists this week answered the following question: Do American voters rely too much on the physical presentation of candidates in presidential and vice presidential debates?
Guest View: Superintendent discusses student success and the state budget
The latest state API (Academic Performance Index) scores were published today. This is how San Benito High School scored in all its subgroups against high schools around the state. (Note: Students in grades 9-11 were tested in April, 2012.) Enrollment of tested students by percentage is also offered for comparison purposes. Scores over 800 are defined as “highly performing,” and 800 is the target score for the state in all categories.
Letter: Former employer supports Snow
Keith Snow had worked for North West Surfacing and North West Recyclers. We were first introduced to Keith Snow when he was about 12-years old, a Sacramento Bee paper delivery boy. While delivering the paper, he was soliciting mowing lawns. The soliciting of mowing lawns evolved into detailing all of our company vehicles. When Keith Snow was old enough to work, we hired him as an employee and he was one of the best. Keith Snow has an immense loyalty and a compelling drive to do what is right even in adverse situations. Keith is driven by honesty. He later became a foreman and directed construction activities. He always had a unique disposition to put the customer first. Keith later would direct the North West Recycling daily activities.
Letter: Calif. is Obama’s 47 percent
Everyone seems so caught up by Romney’s “47%” comments. With a secret hidden camera the twisted press sensationalized it by taking Romney’s comments out of context to generate “breaking news” and “serious investigative journalism” which gave the talking heads weeks of fodder.

Panelists this week answered the question: Do you think the debates will affect the outcome of the presidential election?
Editorial: Hollister should include county in bid preference for vendors
It is wise for government officials to use all the tools they can in the tool box when it comes to economic development, so Hollister Council members are on the right path in giving a bidding preference to local vendors that are interested in city contracts. They veered off that path of logic, however, in choosing to exclude businesses in San Benito County that are outside city limits.
Letter: Reader says a ‘no’ vote on Measure E sales tax would be responsible
Measure E will callously squeeze a large percentage of income from the poor, seniors, the disabled and families who have lost jobs, health insurance, even their homes, than of the affluent.
Another View: 2008 candidate of hope and change? He didn’t show up
This was a debate for the green-eyeshade crowd. If you tuned in Wednesday night to see President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney offer inspiring visions for the future, you heard more numbers than you did paeans to America.
Letter: Resident upset at public works for allowing seismic testing
I cannot believe the San Benito Public Works Department gave permission to a company to do seismic testing all along our county roads and then allowed them to begin pounding the ground with huge trucks. The pounding was so powerful that windows rattled and almost shattered. Someone was hiking along the road and they said it was so powerful that it could have knocked them down, but they saw her and stopped pounding until she went past the truck. The road bed was destroyed in some places. They told us they were testing for earthquake activity. The public works department gave permission without even investigating who this company was and what they were really doing. Perhaps they did know and just didn’t care! Big money talks. Shame on them for deceiving the taxpayers of this county who pay their salaries. They were really testing to see if they could extract oil and gas with a method called fracking. If this company is allowed to do this it will affect all of San Benito County.
