Free Lance Editorial: County on right track with vendor enforcement
Neglecting enforcement of illegal vendors in the area is a self-inflicted wound on the county's No. 1 industry, a safety hazard for potential buyers and a liability risk for government entities that ignore the problem.
Water Cooler: Are you worried about the space shuttle program ending?
Steve Staloch: “No. Its demise should become the poster child for all such ‘lofty’ federal projects that are essentially pork-barrel and have no justifiable or sustainable return on investment.”
Guest View: Honoring Holocaust Remembrance Day
April 19 marked Holocaust Remembrance Day, the internationally recognized date that commemorates the millions of lives that were lost at the hands of Nazi perpetrators. More importantly, the day reminds us that addressing and preventing crimes against humanity and other atrocities is a responsibility we all share.
Letter: Owner says no one was stabbed at Johnny’s
Imagine my mortification when I read the following press release on the KION TV website:
Guest view: Planet Earth – love it or leave it

Letter: Retired firefighter sounds off on county contract issue
As a response to the “Our View” article “Politics trumps public safety…” in last week’s Free Lance, the most important consideration regarding fire station coverage is always going to be response times. Letter: Students should stop illegally crossing street
I have seen many time after school high school kids jay walking. They don't look when crossing the street. Principal Krystal Lomanto should tell her kids not to jay walk when going home from school. Drivers curse and flip students off – no wonder. Don't jay walk and look up from the cell phone when you cross. Students are passionate about safety? I don't think so!
Letter: Response to trustee’s racism claim
I am writing this letter in response to the guest view in which Ray Rodriguez accused the administration of San Benito High School of racism based on having separate presentations in both English and Spanish that were related, but not the same, and your response to it in the paper. While I agree with neither of you, I do agree with both of you in one sense: the time has come for all people of all races, colors, religions, physical abilities and ethnicities to be treated fairly and equally and to have equal opportunities and access to all our society has to offer. I have a simple suggestion as to how we might achieve this. It has to do with getting rid of one small punctuation mark that will forever cause race to be an issue in this and all countries, THE HYPHEN.

It is understandable that three Hollister council members who are up for reelection in November have personal matters holding up their commitments, or lack thereof, to run on the ballot.
