Marty: An evening with the veterans
Last Wednesday was the 70th anniversary of the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor by the Empire of Japan and the local American Legion and VFW sponsored memorial ceremonies and an informal dinner in honor of the World War II veterans. Appropriately, it was at Hollister's Veterans Memorial Building and a surprising 26 World War II vets attended the event, and I made it too. I came to honor all the vets and in memory of my Dad who served during WWII although not overseas; my father-in-law who spent 3-1/2 years in Japanese POW and labor camps only to die shortly after war's end; and my father's cousin, age 24, who was killed in 1942 during the sea battles off Guadalcanal.

San Benito County supervisors last week made a logical decision when they decided to forgo an amended Williamson Act program because it would have been a waste of time to move forward when the vast majority of involved property owners have no interest.
Marty: City cuts – clear as mud
The Hollister City Council recently approved a series of employee contract changes designed to reduce personnel costs. The new contracts sailed through the process even though the staff reports lacked the basic information required for any logical decision – the value and timing of any proposed savings versus the same for any estimated added expenses. Without a financial analysis, it is impossible for the public to determine if the new contracts made significant strides towards solvency or were just smoke and mirrors.
Editorial: Commuting practice must end
Councilman Robert Scattini may have been the wrong person to criticize the police department for allowing a captain to commute 90 miles round trip each day in a squad car on the city's dime - because Scattini's use of a county vehicle during his 22-year tenure as marshal allows defenders of the expense to cloud the debate - but he was right in pointing out the unfair perk.
