Our land

Like the rising floods ravaging parts of Texas and Louisiana, this week ended in a deluge of breaking news. San Juan Bautista City Manager Roger Grimsley, who also doubled as the small town’s city engineer, abruptly resigned Tuesday during the city council meeting after...

Letter to the editor: Mayoral candidate has promising ideas

I love Hollister. I have always loved my hometown. I have been blessed to live where I was born. There are so many awesome folks living here.  Whether you're new or old to the community, we all call this home.  I have been volunteering lately...

Guest view: The path forward for HHMH

As someone who was born and raised in Hollister, whose mom was a nurse at the original hospital when it was downtown, I feel a special connection to this community—like so many of you. I was born at Hazel Hawkins, and today, as interim...

Letter: Snow would serve city well

I have known Keith for over three years and he is a respectful and intelligent man. He became involved in our community shortly after moving here and attended many city and county meetings to learn about Hollister and San Benito County. He has an engineering background and suffered a very unfortunate industrial accident that has left him partially crippled and with a speech impediment but it definitely did not affect his brain or his interest in making a difference in our community. If you have read any of his letters to the editor you are aware of what I am saying. He will serve our city well if he is elected. He wants the city to be fiscally responsible and is very interested in making a difference for our youth. My vote is for Keith Snow.

The following organizations deserve either roses or weeds this

Community Board: Trust lost for yet another SBHS bond

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Community Board: Basketball Jones founder left impact on thousands

How many people can say they positively affected thousands of children in their lives? Gene Cotter was among the very few in that prestigious club.

Guest View: Statue offers source of inspiration

When Eric Tognazzini passed away from cancer on May 20, 2011, San Benito County mourned. He was only 64 years old, but he had somehow managed to become known, loved and an inspiration for an amazing number of people. His smile and friendly wave greeted everyone he passed as he rode around Hollister on his three-wheeled bike, collecting aluminum cans for his recycling business. On any day of the week, Eric could be seen around Downtown Hollister. From Nino’s Pizzeria to Baywood Creamery, from Public Drive-In Market to Schipper’s, from Ladd’s Hardware to Muenzer’s Sporting Goods, Eric was part of Hollister itself.
