Guest View: Response to ‘Stark contrast in openness between districts’
The Free Lance has praised the Hollister School District for being open and waiting to put a bond in the election. Open because they said they “will have to refine the project list” or open because they said they don't know what projects they want to do so they are waiting. The paper also stated of San Benito High School District, “Much of the discourse has been about narrowing the project list – a long slate of ideas”. The paper uses a negative description for SBHS District. The Free Lance sounds as if it is campaigning for HSD. Whatever this paper’s issues are with SBHS District, you realize that the students will pay for your tactics. You can try to convince yourself it is about the SBHS district but the district will eventually serve the majority of this community’s children.
Water Cooler: Candidates with recent drug or alcohol history
Panelists answered the following: In light of the Toronto Mayor Rob Ford saga, would you vote for a political candidate with a recent history of drug or alcohol abuse?
Letter: Candidate shares observations
My name is Keith Snow and I am here for a quick turnaround. Standing behind the people 100%. Especially our youth. They are the future. One day they will grow up to be so many amazing things, like a doctor, or even a boxer, like the young kids who attend the nonprofit Bull Dog’s boxing gym, which I proudly sponsor. Another important thing is the future of our city. I have been going to meetings for a while now, and I do not go just to go, this is freedom of speech. I want to mention that it doesn't look right when the mayor and council is always looking for answers from Marty. Why are they always asking him for answers for their problems? There may be things between them, but for the fact as a leader you should be able to solve problems on your own. Also the only time they answer questions back during meetings is to Marty and people they know. That seems like special privileges. I feel that is very disrespectful towards me and other citizens. When I ask questions they never answer me. I am not going there for my health. I am going there to learn, and for my election and do research for the people.
Guest View: Reaffirm protection for Pinnacles
A previous editorial chided local government for its lack of effort at marketing the Pinnacles National Park and that the “economic behemoth” that is our nation's newest national park is being neglected, under advertised and generally ignored by the business sector and government. The reality is that benign neglect would be preferable to what may be in store for the park if the development of oil and gas resources is allowed in San Benito County. Over 100 years ago, the Pinnacles gained protection from miners and resource interests intent on despoiling this priceless natural wonder. The park, with its host of unique rock formations and species, is once again in danger but this time the danger is posed by an external threat.
Water Cooler: Drought caused by global warming?
Panelists answered the following: Do you believe California's drought is caused by global warming?
Letter: In support of high school’s Measure G
After viewing the sample ballot for the June 3 election, I was surprised to see who the organization was that authored the argument against the high school bond Measure G. It was the Silicon Valley Taxpayer Association. Are you kidding me? The authors of the argument against Measure G don’t live here, they don’t vote here and they do not pay taxes here. And yet there are telling us how to vote in our own backyard.
Guest View: Land-use issue a community threat
I read Marvin Jones guest opinion article with great interest regarding the anti-fracking ballot box initiative proposed by San Benito Rising. Marvin and I do not agree on partisan politics, but on this issue I stand with him and affirm his position. San Benito Rising is a wolf in sheep's clothing supposing to appeal to environmental sentiments when in reality, the group is proposing another land-use initiative similar to the failed 2004 Measure G Growth control measure, adopted by the San Benito County Board of Supervisors at the time, that was ultimately defeated by voter referendum.
Water Cooler: Do you consider Obamacare a success to this point?
With the enrollment period over, do you consider the Affordable Care Act a success at this point?
Letters: County needs to ban fracking
In response to the Free Lance view by Marvin Jones, it's apparent that the Ban Fracking Initiative has not been read carefully! Much of what's stated by Mr. Jones is incorrect.
Editorial: A middleground on the daycare smoking ban
Considering the known health impacts from tobacco residue, it might seem like an obvious decision to ban smoking 24 hours a day in licensed home daycare facilities. A disclosure requirement at the homes where someone smokes, however, accomplishes the same goal while allowing residents to maintain personal freedom in their homes.
