Hollister defeats Monterey 11-9 in All-Star game
Hollister – Hollister’s Kevin Orosco enjoyed playing in Sunday’s Monterey Bay Men’s Adult Baseball League All-Star game in Hollister as much as anyone.
But after 12 innings, he decided enough was enough and hit his second two-run home run to give Holister a 11-9 victory over the Monterey All-Stars.
With each pitcher allowed just two innings of work during the All-Star game, both teams were struggling to find arms to finish.
Kalev Betancourt pitched the final two innings for the victory for Hollister. He didn’t allow any hits and struck out four.
Hollister took a 4-0 lead after the first inning on home runs by Orosco and Dave Marquez. Monterey tied the score with four runs in the third inning.
Down three runs with two out in the ninth, Monterey’s Chris Bryan hit a three-run shot to right field – his first of the year – to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
Monterey worked out a run in the 10th to go ahead for the first time in the game. But Hollister answered with a run of its own.
The defensive play of the game was in the fifth inning when Nick Bakich in center field quickly fielded a hit and relayed it home to catcher Gabby Estrada, who tagged the runner out trying to score from second.
