After many months without a parking enforcement officer downtown, the city this week announced it hired back an attendant to patrol the area.

Following a six-year hiatus, the city re-implemented parking enforcement downtown in October 2009. After two separate, temporary parking attendants fulfilled their commitments – while the city had sought for a permanent “community service officer” – the city in August put the enforcement on hold. Before that postponement, the city had reported surpassing its revenue expectations and giving about 100 tickets monthly.

The police department, though, recently hired two community service officers – one for parking enforcement downtown and another for animal shelter work. That parking attendant – former police Capt. Robert Brooks, also the first of two temporary officers – started this week.

The department for a week plans to hand out warning tickets for overtime parking, but will start enforcing other violations.

The Hollister Downtown Association in 2009 proposed the reinstated parking fines downtown while representing businesses concerned about fellow shops’ employees using up many of the available spaces in the area.
