In just its second tournament of the season, the Tri-County Patriots 18U travel baseball team took first place at the Hardtke Classic Series last weekend when it compiled a 3-0 record and outscored its opponents by a sizable 23-5 margin.
Made up of players from Hollister, Gilroy, La Selva Beach, Lancaster, Morgan Hill, Moss Landing and Mountain View, the Patriots posted its most comfortable victory in the championship final, where it shut out the SC Buckeyes 8-0 on Sunday at Wilcox High School in Santa Clara.
Coached by Noel Provost, Justin Patton and Jim Woida, the Patriots advanced to the championship game after defeating two teams, the SV Yankees and the East Bay Playmakers, in back-to-back contests on Saturday.
The Patriots outlasted the Yankees 5-3 in the tournament opener at Pioneer High School in San Jose, then dispatched the Playmakers 10-2 later in the day to advance to the series final.
“It was a team effort, with every player on the team contributing to the tournament victory,” coach Jim Woida said. “We have a talented group of kids and they all seem to really enjoy playing together. That alone makes it fun to coach the team.”
The Patriots received strong pitching performances from Julian Estrada, J.P. Howard and Miles Sanchez, while key hitters included Ramiro Chapa, Justin Terrill, Anthony Alvarez, Tyler Provost and Josh Raney.
“We hope to take this momentum and continue to grow as a team and individuals,” Woida said.
