Local Laura Vela wins scholarship

Two youth from the local Workforce Investment Act (WIA) work experience program completed and submitted applications for the Dwight Brydie Scholarship.

Laura Vela was the recipient of one in five from the state recognized by CWA on Jan. 20.

Vela began in the summer of 2008 in the WIA’s Work Experience Program where she was placed at the YMCA. Some of her duties consisted of: working with the children in group activities, supporting YMCA staff with policies and procedures, being a positive role model for the children and communicating with staff and parents regarding the children’s needs and/or concerns. Vela has worked both the summer camps and the after school programs. She has consistently received excellent evaluations on her job duties and ability to work well with others. Her positive attitude and cooperation have made her a valued employee at the YMCA. Vela has been working for the YMCA while also attending Gavilan College.

Vela is now enrolled in her third year at Gavilan College. She continues to work towards her associate’s degree. Although she has had to work through several obstacles, Vela moves forward and is determined to complete what she has set out to accomplish. She has shown through perseverance that she has the desire to move forward by continuing her education and eventually her goal of helping others through her work.

“In regards to my future employment, the most important thing is to influence others in a beneficial manner,” she said in a press release. “Whether the job is a guidance counselor, a children’s therapist, or a social worker these would all be great jobs to do just that.”

CSWD staff received a congratulatory letter on Jan. 5 notifying them that Vela was selected as a 2010 recipient of the Dwight Brydie Scholarship Fund, and that the award of Laura Vela’s Scholarship was presented at the California Workforce Association Annual Youth Conference on Jan. 20 in Long Beach.

The Workforce Investment Board (WIB) congratulated Vela for her hard work and dedication she has exhibited as a Youth Work Experience participant.

The California Workforce Association (CWA) and Youth Development & Research Fund (YDRF) have established a scholarship program fund in memory of Dwight Brydie who was a longstanding employee for EDD and was a committed and passionate advocate for youth. YDRF has also developed the Youth Cultural Competence Institute carrying his name. The Institute is designed to encourage educational and workforce advancement by youth, and have awarded $1,000 scholarships to those youth who plan to attend post secondary education.
