Katherine Hastings, 14, has been selected to compete in the Nationals’ 2009 Miss Jr. Teen San Francisco pageant on March 21. She submitted an application and was interviewed by Patty Neidert, the pageant coordinator.

Hastings is a freshman at Notre Dame, a pianist and a member of 4-H. She will be competing with girls ages 7 to 19 in modeling routines that include casual wear and formal wear. The competitors will also participate in an interview with a judging panel.

The winner of the San Francisco competition will go on to represent the region at the Cities of America National Competition that will take place in Orlando, Florida. More than $60,000 in prizes and awards will be given out.

Hastings is looking for sponsorship to cover the cost of the competition. In a brochure she to sponsors, she wrote: “This is the first pageant that I have entered … my goal for this pageant is to learn as much as I can. My parents were surprised that I wanted to try this, since I am known to be shy.”

She said the hopes the experience will help her gain more confidence and learn about modeling.

Campos graduates basic combat training

Army Reserve Pfc. Krista B. Campos has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values and physical fitness – and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first-aid, foot marches and field training exercises.

She is the daughter of Joe Borges of Kingfisher Drive, Watsonville., and granddaughter of Pauline Cardinalli of Hillcrest Road, Hollister.

Campos is a 2008 graduate of Aptos High School.

b>Kauffman graduates Air Force Basic

Air Force Airman Edward C. Kauffman has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, core values, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Kauffman is the son of Analeah Campbell of Glenview Drive, Hollister. He is a 2004 graduate of Leigh High School, San Jose.
