The San Benito County Retired Teachers Assocation gave out grants to a few lucky local teachers.

Retired teachers give grants to classes

On Dec. 13 at the San Benito County office of Education boardroom, members of the San Benito County Retired Teachers Association Board greeted seven classroom teachers to present $50 grants to be used in the classroom. A lottery in all schools in San Benito County was held and the following teachers were recipients: Mike Lange (Sunnyslope,) Jeanette Bilardi (Cienega,) Nancy Maclean (Cienega,) Sandra Rogers (San Juan,) Patty Starritt (Spring Grove,) Ken Johnson (Jefferson) and Joan Randolph (Spring Grove).
Grant winners said they would use the money in several different ways. Some ideas were for busing to the Tech Museum, science and technology, books for the classroom, CD players, computers for a reading program and the 180 Library Program, plus a classroom joint science fair project.
President Terry Cruz presented the grants on behalf of San Benito County Retired Teachers, Division 26, and thanked them for their dedication to the profession and reminded them that San Benito County Retired Teachers support their endeavors.

Local car club gives back to Chamberlain’s kids

A few days before Christmas, members of the San Juan Bautista chapter of Los Padrinos Car Club transformed their timeless classics into Christmas sleighs, paying a visit to the Chamberlain’s Children Center in Hollister.
Founded in 2008 by a handful of San Juan natives, Los Padrinos is a nonprofit committed to maintaining the low-rider mystique, while raising funds for local charities.
Bearing food and gifts, Los Padrinos arrived at Chamberlain’s to the surprise of the children.
According to Pete Duarte, the president of the San Juan chapter, the early Christmas was made possible by the funds raised at the annual car show it hosts in San Juan.
