Editor,
Last Sunday’s “New York Times” opinion piece, “The War as We Saw It,” should be required reading for all Americans. Its authors, soldiers presently stationed in Iraq, paint a harrowing portrait of American forces as targets of Iraqi armed forced and police.
It is clear to these men that both the armed forces and police have become extensions of the militias that characterize the civil war of which we are now a part.
I hope Free Lance readers will do a Google search (just enter the title in quotes) to read this stunning article. While our Congress drags its feet on withdrawal (they could de-authorize the military spending to expedite a retreat) and our President makes stupid comparisons to Vietnam (a war from which he went AWOL), our nation continues to sacrifice American lives in war for national unity only Iraqis will ultimately decide.
If you support our troops, it is time to do whatever you can to bring them home.
Please write our representatives to demand an immediate withdrawal.
